Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic medicine is a comprehensive system of health care, which blends centuries-old knowledge of natural, non-toxic therapies with current advances in the understanding of health and human systems. Naturopathic physicians are trained as primary health care practitioners, addressing acute and chronic illnesses, and treating people of all ages with a wide range of therapeutic modalities. Education consists of a 4 year, graduate level doctorate education at accredited naturopathic medical colleges, including three years of clinical experience.

The therapies that Naturopathic doctors are trained in include herbal medicine, homeopathy, nutritional therapy, lifestyle counseling, physical medicine, Aryuvedic medicine, hydrotherapy and massage. Naturopathic medicine is not defined by any single or particular therapy, but by the principles that guide practice. Naturopathic doctors seek to address the underlying cause of illness. They are trained to look at the body holistically, taking in consideration mind, body, spirit, and how the environment can affect health.

Currently, Naturopathic doctors are licensed in 14 states as primary care doctors specializing in natural medicine. They utilize both standard and other state of the art diagnostic procedures, including laboratory testing using saliva, blood or stool samples. The license to practice medicine encompasses natural substances as well as conventional pharmaceutical prescribing, referral networking, and integrated care with specialists.

Naturopathic doctors adhere to the following principles to promote the health and well-being of their patients:

First Do No Harm - Naturopathic doctors utilize the most natural, least invasive and least toxic therapies first.

Identify and Treat the Cause – Naturopathic medicine effectively addresses the underlying causes of illness rather than simply suppressing symptoms.

The Healing Power of Nature - Naturopathic doctors recognize that each individual possesses an inherent self-healing ability. We strive to support, facilitate, and promote this healing process by removing the obstacles to health.

Treat the Whole Person - View each patient as an integrated whole, consisting of body, mind, and spirit; consider the multifaceted nature of health and disease within the context of each person’s individual experience.

Doctor as Teacher - Empower patients by educating them in the steps to achieving and maintaining optimal health; listen carefully to their concerns, trust their ability to take responsibility for their own health, and allow them to choose the course of their treatment.

Prevention - Instilling healthy lifestyle practices to help prevent disease and maintain health. Increase awareness of the factors that affects health in the context of a larger social and environmental framework.
